Lyle Kanee Q.C. is a Mediator and Arbitrator of labour relations and other employment law disputes. Lyle practiced law for over twenty-five years in the areas of employment and labour relations law, including grievance and interest arbitration, collective bargaining, wrongful dismissal, human rights, pensions, and long term disability claims. Lyle presented cases before arbitrators, labour boards, administrative tribunals and all levels of the courts. Lyle was counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada in a number of labour and human rights cases including Vriend v. Alberta and Voice Construction. He has broad experience in both the public and private sectors and in a wide range of industries including health care, education, municipal services, construction, retail, and power. Lyle was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2014.
In August 2008 Lyle was appointed a part-time Vice-Chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board. In February 2009, he was also appointed a part-time Vice-Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board. At the same time Lyle commenced his private practice as a Mediator and Arbitrator and has been appointed to the approved arbitrators lists of the Ministry of Labour in Ontario and Alberta Employment and Immigration. Lyle completed the Dispute Resolution Skills Program at Queen’s University, Centre for Industrial Relations. In October 2013 Lyle was appointed to the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Hearing Tribunal as an Adjudicator.
Lyle is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars and has taught labour, employment and labour arbitration as an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta and Osgoode Hall law schools. For a list of Lyle’s more recent speaking engagements, click here.
In 2011 Lyle was invited by Building Trades of Alberta and their corresponding registered employers organizations to design an innovative process of group collective bargaining and to facilitate interest-based bargaining among them. The process concluded with fifteen ratified provincial collective agreements. For a discussion of this successful process, click here. Lyle was invited again in 2014 and 2018 to facilitate the framework bargaining between the building trades and the registered employers organizations.
